Crossing-the-Chesapeake

"Crossing the Chesapeake – 1948"

Oil on Linen 16" x 27".
Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Mudd of Bethesda, Maryland and Rehoboth, Delaware.

A gentleman, who had bought my art before and since, told me of a fond memory he had from his youth and wanted a painting made of it. He and his family would travel by auto to a landing near Annapolis, Maryland and would drive onto the ferry. They would then traverse the Chesapeake, prior to the current bridge, and land on the eastern shore. From there they would drive to Aunt Joan’s home for their summer visit. On one such trip my friend saw and photographed a crabbing skiff, which I included in the foreground of the painting. We found the actual ferry boat in Seattle, Washington which was helpful in giving proper detail to the vessel.
