“Reaching for the Finish”
R.B. “Happy” Hogshire won the National Championship of the Hampton One Design Regatta in 1952. He came to me with a photo of himself:
(1) On his Hampton sloop and wanted a painting, which would capture the spirit of that fond memory. I first did a sketch
(2) Showing the fleet beating to windward toward a buoy and then
(3) With the boats in tight competition with the Lafayette River Bridge and the Norfolk Yacht & Country Club in the background. After Happy’s approval of the latter sketch, I did the small 4″ x 8″ oil study
(4). With his go ahead, I did the final oil. He was very pleased with the outcome and we became quite good friends during the project.
Oil on canvas 15″ x 30″
