"Dawn on Shem Creek"
The Barber clan had another family vacation this summer on Isle of Palms, outside Charleston, South Carolina. Son Adam, his wife Mizuha and their son Yoshi joined us from Portland, Oregon. Son Joshua and his wife Melissa joined Kathy and me- the four of us from Richmond, Virginia.
We rented a roomy home on the island and enjoyed our pool, the beach just a few steps away and lots of other activities such as shopping, dining, kayaking, jet skiing and fishing. A few of us hired a local fishing guide with the plan of meeting just after dawn at the harbor of Shem Creek and we’d travel by boat to the nearby fishing “hot spots”. This picturesque creek just north of Charleston is home to a fleet of local fishing and shrimping boats and a wonderful collection of waterfront restaurants. As we motored down the creek toward historic Charleston harbor, I looked back to see this beautiful sunrise behind the group of shrimp trawlers as the morning mist began to clear. It was a scene that I knew I must capture in oil later in my studio. Our day was filled with catching the local favorite “redfish” as well as bonnethead sharks and even a small hammerhead!
