In this oil painting, we see a skipjack sailing for home after a long day of work. These wooden vessels were designed and built to haul general cargo and dredge oysters on the Chesapeake Bay. There are a few still oystering even today in the Maryland waters of the bay. On the horizon, we see massive storm clouds, which can easily threaten these vessels, some over one hundred years old. Last fall I was invited for a day of rock fishing aboard Breezin’ Thru, a 47‘, 1949 vintage charter fishing boat from Kent Island, Maryland. This traditional, custom built wooden boat is operated by Captain Tilghman Hemsley. His forebears came to this area from England in the early 1700s.
